Markham has a little bit of everything– delicious dining spots, a multicultural makeup, and even a high-tech side that has made this city one to watch. Nearly 340,000 people call Markham their home, which also makes this municipality the largest in terms of population in GTA’s sprawling York Region.

Originally incorporated as a village in the 19th century, the Markham of today is a patchwork of over 40 historic communities. These include the western part of Thornhill (the other half is located in Vaughan), Unionville, Armadale, and Victoria Square.

Markham real estate at a glance

To date, Markham has an average house price of approximately C$1.2 million. About 60% of the housing market consists of single-detached homes. Apartments and townhouses are also available in the city. Whichever property type you choose to focus your search, expect at least three to four bedrooms and a good mix in terms of age. A lot of homes in Markham are fairly recent builds (2000), but the market also has a sizable collection of homes built between the 1960s and 1980s.

There are many family-friendly neighbourhoods in Markham to choose from, such as Angus Glen, Cornell, Greensborough, and Markham Village.

Things to love about Markham

  • One-of-a-kind events. Markham’s social calendar is filled with local community gatherings and highly anticipated events. One of these is the Markham Jazzlicious WinterFest, which combines good music by Canadian artists and great food prepared by local partner restaurants.
  • Flavorful dining scene. With over half of its population from different parts of the world, Markham is home to an especially exciting culinary scene. Recommended stops to any food tour include Inspire (Asian fusion), Peter’s Fine Dining (steak and seafood), NextDoor (modern Canadian), Chef 88 Elite (Chinese), and Tahchinbar (Iranian).
  • Green pathways. Markham has about 22 kilometers of dedicated trails and paths that run through ravines and wooded lots. This is on top of the city’s many parks, some of which provide critical habitats for local flora and fauna.
